September - What's looking good in the Garden this month?

Osteospermum jucundum - Entrance path (see Garden plan number 1). A neat, clump-forming perennial with greyish green leaves and mauve-pink flowers with purple on the reverse and a purple eye. Max height 50cm. Max spread 80cm. Flowers May to September.
 
Musa basjoo - Subtropical Effect Garden (2).  Japanese Banana. This hardy banana makes a striking addition to any exotic garden. A very handsome plant with large green leaves and creamy-yellow flowers with brown bracts. Max height 3.5m. Max spread 1.6m. Flowers July. Fruits October.

Paulownia tomentosa - Subtropical Effect Garden (2).  Foxglove Tree. A broadly columnar tree with hairy bright green leaves and pretty pinkish lilac flowers marked yellow inside. Max height 12m. Max spread 10m. Flowers May to June. Full sun. Hardy. Cutting back this tree each year results in impressively large leaves.
 
Pennisetum villosum - At the start of the Double Mixed Borders (3).  A loosely tufted perennial grass with narrow mid-green leaves. Attractive plume-like, feathery pale green or white flowers becoming purple from late summer to early autumn. Max height 60cm. Max spread 60cm. Flowers August to September.

Sedum Herbstfreude (Autumn Joy) - Grasses Garden (4).  A clump-forming perennial with fleshy glaucous dark green leaves. Flat clusters of star-shaped deep pink flowers in early autumn. Max height 60cm. Max spread 60cm. Flowers September to October. Full sun. Hardy.

Romneya coulteri - On the right of the Double Mixed Borders (3). Tree Poppy.  An upright, deciduous subshrub with grey-green leaves and cup-shaped white flowers with prominent yellow stamens in summer. Max height 1m to 2.5m. Flowers June to August. Full sun.

Anemone hupehensis Splendens - Wooded Walk (16). Japanese Anemone. Erect perennial with suckering shoots, dark green leaves. Flowers bright pink. Max Height 80cm. Max Spread 40cm. Flowers August to September. Full sun/partial shade. Hardy.

Anemone x hybrida Andrea Atkinson - Wooded Walk (16).  Japanese Anemone. Erect perennial with suckering shoots, mid-green leaves. Semi-double white flowers, with golden yellow stamens. Max height 1.4m. Max spread 60cm. Flowers August to September. Full sun/partial shade. Hardy.

Gunnera manicata - on the banks of Sandell Lake (17).  A very large architectural plant with massive deeply lobed bristly green leaves on strong prickly tall leaf stems. Greenish red tiny flowers on a conical flower spike, followed by red-green fruit. Max height 2.5m. Max spread 3m to 4m. Flowers June to July. Fruits July to August. Full sun/partial shade. Hardy.
